You trusted the hospital. Now, about the device inside you.

Ha investigado los costos. Ha verificado a los cirujanos. Incluso ha planificado la recuperación. But there is one question that lingers for many men considering a penile implant in China — a question that is less about the hospital and more about the tiny piece of engineering that will live inside your body for the rest of your life:

¿Es seguro el dispositivo en sí?

No la cirugía. No el hospital. El implante real. The silicone, the cylinders, the pump, the reservoir — the mechanical system that will be with you through every intimate moment for decades.

Esta es una pregunta que merece una respuesta directa y honesta. Because the penile implant market is not as simple as "made in America = good, made in China = bad." The reality is more nuanced — and understanding it could save you from unnecessary fear or, worse, unnecessary risk.

Las tres marcas que encontrará

When you research penile prosthesis manufacturers, three names dominate the global market — and all three are actively used in Chinese hospitals performing implant surgery.

Coloplast Titan

The Coloplast Titan is a three-piece inflatable penile prosthesis manufactured in Humlebaek, Denmark. It uses a hydrophilic coating designed to absorb antibiotics and reduce bacterial adhesion during implantation. The Titan has been implanted in millions of patients worldwide and is the most commonly used implant in Chinese hospitals that perform high volumes of implant surgery.

The Titan is FDA-cleared (approved for US market) and also holds Chinese NMPA (National Medical Products Administration) registration. This means it has passed both US and Chinese regulatory review — a dual clearance that represents the highest available safety standard.

AMS 700系列 (with InhibiZone)

The American Medical Systems (AMS) 700 series is a three-piece inflatable penile prosthesis manufactured in Minnetonka, Minnesota, USA. The InhibiZone coating combines minocycline and rifampin to reduce the risk of postoperative infection. The AMS 700 has the longest clinical track record of any inflatable prosthesis, with over 30 years of published outcome data.

The AMS 700 is FDA-cleared and also registered with China's NMPA. It is available in Chinese hospitals, though less commonly than the Coloplast Titan due to supply chain and pricing factors.

Dispositivos fabricados en China

In addition to the two major Western brands, there are penile prostheses manufactured domestically in China. These include devices from manufacturers such as Xinuo Medical (鑫诺医疗) and others that are registered with NMPA for domestic sale.

Here is the critical distinction: NMPA registration means the device has passed China's regulatory review process, which evaluates safety and efficacy data similar to (though not identical to) the FDA process. A device does not need to be FDA-cleared to be legally sold in China — it needs NMPA clearance.

Chinese-made penile prostheses are generally less expensive than their Western counterparts and are used in both public and private hospitals across China. The clinical data on these devices is more limited than the decades of data available for Coloplast and AMS, but they are not untested or unregulated.

What "FDA-cleared" actually means — and what it does not

The term "FDA-cleared" carries enormous weight in the minds of international patients. It feels like a guarantee of safety. It is important to understand what it actually represents.

What FDA clearance means:

  • The device manufacturer submitted a premarket notification (510(k)) demonstrating that the device is substantially equivalent to a legally marketed predicate device.
  • The FDA reviewed safety and efficacy data.
  • The device meets US manufacturing and quality standards.
  • The device can be legally marketed and sold in the United States.

What FDA clearance does not mean:

  • It does not mean the device is the best option available.
  • It does not mean non-FDA-cleared devices are unsafe.
  • It does not mean the FDA has conducted independent testing — the 510(k) pathway relies on comparison to existing devices.
  • It does not account for surgeon skill, hospital quality, or patient-specific factors, which matter more than device brand for most outcomes.

The Coloplast Titan and AMS 700 are both FDA-cleared and NMPA-registered. Dispositivos fabricados en China are NMPA-registered but not FDA-cleared. All three categories are legally used in Chinese hospitals. The safety difference between them, in terms of actual clinical outcomes, is smaller than the marketing language suggests.

Lo que los datos clínicos realmente muestran

The best outcome data comes from large, multi-center registries that track implant performance over years.

The 12-year US Medicare study (1991–2003) provides the most comprehensive long-term data on implant outcomes. Across 10,941 implant procedures, mechanical failure rates were 6.4% at 5 years, 11.7% at 10 years, and 21.3% at 15 years. This data applies primarily to older device generations — modern implants with improved materials and coatings perform significantly better.

A 2024 systematic review of 307 studies covering 56,473 penile prosthesis implantations found that infection rates for primary implants averaged 0.86%, with diabetic patients showing a slightly higher but still low risk. The overall revision rate was approximately 10.6% over the study period.

For the hydrophilic coating specifically — used by both Coloplast Titan and AMS InhibiZone — randomized clinical trial data shows a reduction in infection rates. The coloplast-titan data shows infection rates below 1% in primary implant cases.

The key insight: outcomes depend more on surgical technique and patient factors than on device brand. A well-performed implant with a Chinese-made device by an experienced surgeon will outperform a poorly performed implant with a premium Western device.

La pregunta precio-calidad: por qué está pagando realmente

The price difference between device categories is real. In the Chinese medical tourism market:

  • Coloplast Titan or AMS 700: Device cost typically ranges from $4,500 to $8,000 depending on the hospital and whether you are paying self-pay or insurance rates.
  • Chinese-made NMPA-registered devices: Device cost typically ranges from $2,000 to $4,000.

The premium for Western devices pays for several things:

  1. Longer clinical track record — decades of published outcome data
  2. Hydrophilic or antibiotic coating — proven infection reduction
  3. Global supply chain and parts availability — important if you need revision surgery years later
  4. Brand familiarity for international patients — peace of mind

What the premium does not pay for:

  1. A fundamentally different surgical procedure
  2. A dramatically different infection rate in experienced hands
  3. A guarantee against mechanical failure

For patients who prioritize the longest available safety data and the most published outcomes, Coloplast Titan or AMS 700 represent the conservative choice. For patients who are comfortable with NMPA-regulated devices with a shorter but growing clinical record, Chinese-made implants offer a legitimate alternative at significantly lower cost.

Cómo verificar lo que está recibiendo

Before your surgery, you have the right to know exactly which device will be implanted. Here is what to ask:

1. "What is the brand and model of the prosthesis?"
Request the specific manufacturer name, product line, and model number. Do not accept vague answers like "a high-quality implant" or "a Western-style device."

2. "Is it NMPA-registered?"
All devices legally used in Chinese hospitals must be NMPA-registered. Ask to see the registration documentation.

3. "Is it FDA-cleared?"
If this matters to you — and for many international patients it does — ask directly. Coloplast Titan and AMS 700 are both FDA-cleared. Dispositivos fabricados en China are not.

4. "How many of these specific devices have you implanted?"
Surgeon experience with a specific device matters more than the device itself. A surgeon who has implanted 200 Coloplast Titans will have better outcomes than one who has implanted 20 AMS 700s — and vice versa.

5. "What is your revision rate for this device?"
Honest surgeons track their own revision rates. A rate below 5% at 5 years is good. A rate above 10% warrants explanation.

La evaluación honesta

The penile prosthesis market in China offers real options — not just one category of device. You can choose FDA-cleared, NMPA-registered Western implants (Coloplast Titan, AMS 700) or NMPA-registered Dispositivos fabricados en China. All three are legally regulated, clinically tested, and used in Chinese hospitals performing implant surgery.

The safety gap between these categories is narrower than marketing language suggests. What matters more than device origin is surgical skill, hospital quality, and honest pre-operative communication about exactly what will be implanted.

If the device brand is a priority for you — and there is no shame in wanting the longest available safety data — choose a hospital that offers Coloplast Titan or AMS 700. If cost is the primary concern and you are comfortable with NMPA-regulated devices, Chinese-made implants are a legitimate option.

Lo que nunca debe aceptar es la ambigüedad. Before you consent to surgery, you have the right to know the brand, the model, the registration status, and the surgeon's experience with that specific device. Any surgeon who cannot or will not provide this information is not the surgeon for you.
