Dongzhimen Hospital, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine

Dongzhimen Hospital is the primary teaching hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM), one of China's leading TCM universities. Located in central Beijing's Dongcheng District, it functions as a comprehensive clinical, teaching, and research center for Chinese medicine. Founded in 1958 alongside the establishment of BUCM's clinical teaching program, the hospital has grown into a 1,500-bed comprehensive TCM hospital — one of the busiest dedicated TCM hospitals in Beijing.

Over six decades, Dongzhimen has expanded from a modest teaching clinic into a multi-building medical campus, adding specialized wards for stroke rehabilitation, pulmonary disease, and acupuncture over successive development phases. The hospital holds Grade A Class A (三甲) status, the highest tier in China's hospital grading system, held by only about 5% of hospitals nationwide. As the university's flagship clinical base, it serves as the training ground for China's next generation of TCM physicians at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels.

Dongzhimen is particularly noted for its neurology and stroke rehabilitation program, which combines acupuncture, herbal medicine, and modern neurological rehabilitation techniques. This department is designated a National Key Specialty and has led national TCM stroke guideline development. The respiratory medicine department is known for TCM management of COPD, asthma, and post-infectious cough using classical formulas. The hospital's acupuncture and tuina department is a major referral center for chronic pain, facial paralysis, and post-stroke motor deficits.

The hospital also hosts internationally recognized specialties in nephrology (TCM approaches to chronic kidney disease) and andrology, a relatively rare sub-specialty in which Dongzhimen has national recognition. As the primary teaching hospital of BUCM — one of China's elite TCM universities under the national Project 211 framework — the hospital's faculty includes multiple nationally designated senior TCM practitioners and doctoral advisors who have shaped TCM education curricula used across China's TCM universities.

Dongzhimen has a strong international presence through BUCM's extensive overseas partnerships. The hospital operates an International Medical Department that handles English-language consultation requests, admission coordination, and follow-up for international patients. BUCM itself attracts a significant number of international students in TCM programs — many of whom rotate through Dongzhimen — creating a naturally multilingual environment in some departments. Interpreter services for languages other than English and Chinese are limited and should be arranged in advance.
